Hillamarkkinat are organized right in the centre of Ranua. Parking areas area appointed. Entering market area is free of charge. Competitions and dance have enter fee. Vending machine can be found on the wall of S-Market Ranua on the other side of the road of Hillamarkkinat area.

History of Hillamarkkinat

When Hillamarkkinat was organized in Ranua for the first time in mid 70s, we imagined that we are having a small fair for our local foragers and producers. At first, we did not even accept market sellers from other areas. However, already during our first event, we came to realize that this could be developed into a market fair for whole Lapland. Today we can proudly tell that Hillamarkkinat is a national event where guests and market sellers come from all around.

We actually conducted a research of our visitors and sellers and it truly tells us that after Lapland, most of our visitors come from Uusimaa region. It is not far to forest to say that Ranua is known for Ranua Zoo but Hillamarkkinat as well. In the year of research, the number of visitors was 15k. That was not even our best year. 

Number of visitors varies yearly depending on weather and other events close-by. Hillamarkkinat is always organized the first weekend of August so sometimes there can be overlapping happenings with other villages. One of the greatest reasons to come to the fair is cloudberry and how good the harvest has been. Every year we manage to get cloudberry to fair even if it would have been poor berry year – so our name Hillamarkkinat (Golden Cloudberry Fair) is well-earned. 

We believe that Hillamarkkinat will continue to be a meaningful event for locals and visitors. Market sellers who are the spirit of the fair, are welcome. We are greeting our loyal sellers with warm welcome as they have continued to come to fair for years and years. New ones are also hoped to become familiar faces around HIllamarkkinat.

Even though Hillamarkkinat began with being an event for local producers and foragers, now a days it has grown so popular that it is opened to market sellers from elsewhere as well. You can book your spot from our web store.
